(Application period starts on June 28, 2011 and the deadline is September 30 2011. No preference will be given to early submissions.)
Between January and June 2011, for the first time in BC, the United Way Public Policy Institute brought together public policy experts to work with leaders in social services and health-related agencies who wanted to better understand and influence the public policy process. According to participants, faculty and United Way staff involved, the first cohort of the United Way Public Policy Institute was a resounding success.
The second cohort of the Public Policy Institute will once again bring together approximately 25 leaders from the non-profit sector to attend monthly two-day sessions from January to June 2012. Enrollment is open to participants from all regions of the province.
Mike Harcourt, former premier of British Columbia, will return as Lead Faculty for this second cohort. All other faculty members have also agreed to return. They are equally as knowledgeable as Mr. Harcourt and include former provincial government and public services leaders Elizabeth Cull, Brenda Eaton, Ida Goodreau, and Liz Whynot.
Sessions will explore such topics as public policy research, analysis of policy alternatives, and decision-making. Each participant will be required to do additional work on a project that responds to a current policy issue of strategic interest to his or her organization. By the end of the program, participants will present their project to faculty and their peers, showcasing their critical thinking, analysis, and strategy recommendations.
