The annual United Way Lower Mainland Day of Caring is a unique opportunity for employees in a workplace to come together, develop team-building skills and make a difference in our community. Day of Caring is a mobilization of hundreds of corporate volunteers with the goal to help local nonprofit social service agencies complete one day projects.
During the week of June 6 - 10, 2011 and September 19 - 23, 2011 at community agencies throughout the Lower Mainland.
Teams of caring employees from companies throughout the Lower Mainland that conduct a United Way Campaign and are invited to participate by United Way. Not-for-profit social service agencies throughout the Lower Mainland receive volunteer support.
You can request as many projects as you need. Please fill out one application for each project. If you project cannot be matched, you will be contacted to see if you would like your project deferred to the next cycle of Day of Caring, if it is applicable.
Once all agency project applications are in and company applications are reviewed appropriate matches are made based on preferences indicated on applications. Agency applications must fit the criteria for a project. If your agency is flexible with timing, this helps to match your organization with a company team.
Day of Caring is a free event for participants and is made possible by the generosity of our sponsors. Agencies are required to secure their own tools, equipment and materials. United Way provides, volunteer help. Occasionally, companies may offer to supply tools and equipment or a small donation to help complete the project.
It is expected that the agency will provide all major supplies and tools necessary to do the project. It is up to the agency to seek donations of supplies and tools, if necessary. Agencies should try to provide lunch, snacks, drinks and water, especially for volunteers at all-day projects.
United Way sends out a photographer to some projects to capture, areas, issues and a variety of organizations. Agencies are encouraged to take their own photographs and a photo waiver is available on www.uwlm.ca for their use.
Health and safety guidelines are available on our website for use by agencies and companies
If a project is weather-dependent, the agency and volunteer team should work out a rain plan. Pre-determine an alternate day to complete the project, and determine how you will get the word out to all volunteers that the project has been rescheduled. Alternatively, plan to complete other indoor projects if required.
